BENGAL CLUB U-16 Boys Schools Football Tournament-2017

 

BengaI Club, Shivaji Park, Mumbai, in keeping with its glorious time-tested tradition of promoting a healthy Sporting Culture in Mumbai and its neighbourhood, organized a 2-day SchoolBoys (under-16) Football Tournament on its own grounds on 9th & 10th September 2017.

8 teams from prominent local schools viz. St. Paul’s (Dadar), Seven Days (Jacob Circle), Sri Maa (Thane), Utpal Sanghvi (Juhu), Sacred Heart (Santacruz), St.Lawrence (Kandivli), S.M. Shetty (Powai) & Anjuman-i-islam (CST) participated in the knockout matches held on 9th Sept.’17 to decide the semifinalists. The semis & the final matches were held on 10th Sept.’17.  In the first of the 2 semis Sacred Heart beat Utpal Sanghvi and in the 2nd St.Lawrence got the better of St. Paul’s. St. Lawrence won the closely fought final. An attractive exhibition match between two well-known teams viz. Karnataka Sports Association & Mumbai Strikers at the same venue was also held to add to the glamour & excitement of the event and encourage the grassroots footballers.

Shri Deelip Bhattacharya, Secretary, Bengal Club Sports Academy & himself a reputed ex-Western Railway footballer put in immense efforts in organizing this tourney & strove hard to see its successful staging. Shri A. P. Rodrigues, member of MSSA & MDFA helped him in a big way. The winners, runners-up were awarded with handsome cash prizes, trophies, gifts and medals and special gifts were given away to the exhibition match players.

With the World U-17 football tournament about to be staged soon for the first time in India, the Bengal Club Executive Committee felt that this would be an opportune time to conduct this tournament adding to the excitement & encouraging young sporting talent, some of whom may mature into big stars in the future.

Mr. Udayan Banerjee, Secretary Mumbai District Football Association graced the Final match & the Presentation ceremony following it, as the Chief Guest while Mr. Sebastian  Fernandes, Hon. Football Secretary Mumbai Schools Sports Association and Esmero Figuerido, Gen. Secretary MSSA were also present as the Guests of Honour on the occasion.

Bengal Club also has plans to organize a limited overs’ cricket tournament later this year & an athletics meet for its members in December 2017.
